My lips get ridiculously dry in the wintertime so I’m always reaching for a tube of lip balm from my bag, but I wondered if there were an easier and cheaper way to make my own at home. Luckily there is, and it’s pretty simple to do!
I was inspired by Burt’s Bees Lip Balm because of the idea of all natural ingredients, including beeswax. Unfortunately, Burt’s Bees was bought out by the chemical company Chlorox, and now their famous natural lip balms contain canola and soybean oil, which are not that great for your health.
Using Burt’s Bees as my inspiration for this lip balm, the recipe is an inspired copycat version which actually comes out pretty darn close to the consistency. I like to pour my mixture into empty lip tubes like these, but you can also use any small jar or container too.
Once you start on the path of making your own lip balm, and realizing how easy it is, you’ll most likely want to make your own natural deodorant, homemade toothpaste, and natural shampoo!
The best part about making your own lip balm at home is that you can decide what scents to add, what type of consistency you want, optional colors to make it tinted, and what containers to keep them in. They also make amazing stocking stuffers, or gifts for friends and family.
I have two recipes, one is the all natural Burt’s Bees copycat recipe, and the other is a tinted lip balm recipe. Both use the same base lip balm mixture with just a few different variations in ingredients.
Basic Lip Balm Ingredients – (for both recipes)
Beeswax Pastilles – (If making all natural lip balm without any tint, you can use yellow or white beeswax. For tinted lip balm, use white beeswax.)Coconut Oil – (I use the Nutiva brand because it’s organic, cold pressed, and has a very mild coconut flavor.)
Shea Butter Essential Oil:
Optional – (Peppermint, or Orange are great oils to add if you choose)Lip Balm Tubes – (You can also use any empty jar or container, but lip tubes make it easy to give these away as gifts!)
A Plastic Pipette – (Makes filling the tubes so much easier!)
Glass Jar – (Small Mason jars work great)Additional Ingredients For Tinted Lip Balm
Mica PowderFlavoring Oils:
Optional – (These are different than essential oils as they are made for lip balms, soaps, and candles. Totally safe to use on your lips, you can add flavors like vanilla, cherry, orange sherbet, caramel, and more. I use caramel in mine and it smells soooo good!)
Burt’s Bees Copycat Lip Balm Recipe
2 tablespoons Beeswax Pastilles
2 tablespoons Shea Butter2 tablespoons Coconut Oil20-30 drops of Essential Oil of choice
Burt’s Bees Copycat Lip Balm Instructions
Mix Beeswax, Shea Butter, and Coconut Oil in glass jar. Put the jar in a pot of boiling water and stir the ingredients until they are fully melted. The Beeswax will take the longest to melt. Microwave Method: Put jar with ingredients in microwave for 30 seconds at a time, making sure to stir frequently.
After waxes are melted, add your essential oil to the desired level of strength. Peppermint is a great option for the natural lip balm recipe.
While the mixture is still warm, use the plastic pipette to suck up some wax and drop into each empty lip tube, jar, or container.
Let mixture completely cool inside the containers before capping and using. You can speed this process up by sticking them in the fridge.
Tinted Lip Balm Additional Instructions
Add a small amount of Mica Powder to reach desired color level. Add less for a sheer wash of color, and more for a deeper lipstick look.
Add flavoring oil if desired.
If you would like a bit thicker and longer lasting lip balm, use a bit more beeswax. If you would like a softer, more supple balm, use less beeswax. If you already made a batch of wax but you don’t like the consistency, just remelt and add more of whatever ingredient you choose. It’s a very forgiving recipe which means you can adjust the measurements to your liking without wasting ingredients. This recipe should fill about 12-14 tubes, so you’ll have plenty on hand for yourself, or to give away as gifts!
